AJ2 Co., Ltd. was founded on March 25, 2022, but the CEO has been developing iris recognition solutions for over 24 years. AJ2 is now proud that iris recognition technology has reached a top level, and full-scale product sales began in 2024.
Iris recognition stands out among biometric technologies because every iris is unique and it is very hard to fake or change. This means it offers a high level of security.
However, in the past, iris recognition has faced a number of adoption challenges:
• Users had to move their heads, which weigh about 10% of their body weight, to align their eyes with the scanner.
• It required high-cost hardware and algorithms.
• It was sensitive to external lighting conditions and often worked slowly at close range.
Despite these challenges, AJ2 has overcome the limitations with advanced hardware and software. Now, iris recognition is practical and is ready for commercial use.
AJ2’s unique core technology lies in the self-developed optical components — specifically, the camera module and infrared LED, which account for more than 70% of the performance and cost of the iris recognition system.
By integrating these optical components with open-source AI, AJ2 has developed its own ensemble iris recognition solution technology that effectively addresses the challenges faced by conventional iris recognition systems. Building on this technology, AJ2 has also developed an AI Iris Recognition Algorithm using CNN deep learning.

As a result, AJ2's products can recognize a user’s iris and face quickly from 1 meter away, even if the user is wearing glasses. This gives AJ2 an edge over competitors. The system is convenient, accurate, and cost-effective.
Incredibly, AJ2's solution can even detect a user's iris and face from 3 meters away, something that was considered impossible before.

Business Description

Since 2022, following successful PoC projects, AJ2 has been successfully supplying iris recognition modules through U.S. buyers for contractor access control systems for the U.S. government and staff attendance management systems at Canadian airports. As an extension of this business, AJ2 received a request this year from Mexico’s SIASA to supply 1,000 sets of iris recognition modules.
Thanks to our good reputation in North America, we are now working on signing an MOU with Japan’s DENSO to co-develop barcode-type iris recognition modules. Also, we have completed the development of a 3-meter range iris recognition device with TAMRON by co-developing a 25x AF/Zoom lens, and signed a sales MOU together. With support from DENSO and TAMRON, we now have an opportunity to supply “Outdoor Iris Recognition devices” to Japan’s SECOM. In addition, we are preparing a project with RENESAS to include our iris recognition solution in the application note for their new AI-MCU chip.
Hiring a Japanese branch manager has played a key role in our entry into the Japanese market.
For the E-Gate market, AJ2 has completed the development of iris image standardization management software. At the end of 2024, AJ2 submitted an iris recognition standard proposal to the Dubai government in partnership with BIOMETRIYA, and we are now waiting for the results. Since the beginning of this year, AJ2 has been working with Singapore's Closed-Loop to jointly develop an iris recognition solution system for airport self-bag drop, passenger gates, and Malaysia’s land border checkpoints.
To explore a new niche market and prepare for entry into the U.S. market, we signed an NDA and strategic partnership agreement this year with EyeLock, the first iris recognition company in the United States. The niche market we are targeting involves replacing the current payment process—which requires around 10 actions using a card or smartphone—with a ONE-ACTION iris recognition payment solution. In other words, using a card or smartphone for payment requires about 10 steps — such as finding it, taking it out, tapping it, waiting, and putting it back. But with iris recognition, all you need to do is look at the billing screen. Our target market is to enter domestic and international convenience stores, F&B, department stores, and shopping malls.

As its second niche market entry, AJ2 is pursuing a strategic partnership with a domestic membership-based (network marketing) company to secure an iris image big dataset. The iris shows the condition of the body's five major organs: the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. We are developing healthcare solutions related to personal health checks in parallel with iris recognition.
In December 2023, the EU announced regulations to limit the use of facial recognition technology due to concerns over AI-related misuse and potential criminal activities, including the imposition of specific fines. These EU regulations present a major opportunity for the iris recognition market.
Recent trends in biometric authentication are evolving to ensure that biometric systems are only activated with the user's consent. Considering its high level of uniqueness and security, iris recognition is expected to become a mainstream biometric modality in the near future.
